A collaboration between Aston Martin, Ford and Cosworth, the new motor was a normally aspirated all-alloy 60ยฐ V12 with dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and wet-sump lubrication. Essentially derived from a pair of Ford Duratec V6s, each engine was built on Aston Martin's behalf by Cosworth Engineering in Northampton.

The V12 Vanquish was not only the most advanced Aston Martin of it's time - it was a quantum leap from the previous V8 powered cars. Designed by Ian Callum, who also was responsible for the DB7; the V12 Vanquish remained extremely faithful to the Project Vantage although every panel is subtly different. It's 6.0 litre V12 engine was developed from that already available in the DB7.

A 5,935cc unit with chain-driven twin overhead camshafts per bank and four valves per cylinder, it developed 442bhp and 320lb ft of torque. Aston Martin reckoned the V12 gave the Vantage Project a 200mph top speed and a 0-60mph time of just four seconds. The engine began life in the early Nineties as a concept designed by Ford Advanced Vehicle.
